Matt and I are pleased to announce that we had a little baby girl last week! Her name is Mary Ruth ("Ruthie") and she is perfect. She came into the world at 9 pounds 3 ounces and measured 21.5 inches! Here is her story.
My due date was Sunday January 31st. I had a feeling I would be a little late, being that it was my first child. When I got to be about five days late, I was getting pretty uncomfortable. I hadn't slept in a few weeks, and Matt and I were just ready to meet our baby. I had a sonogram on Friday February 5th and they said the baby was 8.5 pounds already but I was only 1 cm dilated. The doctor scraped my membranes and said I was likely to go into labor the next day. We went ahead and scheduled for me to be induced on Sunday night, given that the hospital had some free beds.
Saturday rolled around and sometime in all the chaos I turned the big 3-0. It was definitely a weird birthday, as we hadn't really planned anything because we thought we would be home with a newborn at this time! Matt was sweet and we improvised. My family took me to a nice brunch, and then I grabbed Mexican with my friend Natalie and her boyfriend.
The next day Matt took me for a prenatal massage from a lady who apparently can help induce labor. It didn't induce labor, but it was so relaxing!
Sunday night we called the hospital at 5pm like they told us to, to see if there was an available bed. They said there wasn't then, and to call back at 7. Matt invited his friend Aaron over to smoke cigars in the backyard. The hospital called back at 6 and said we could come in whenever. I let Matt finish his cigar and we ended up going in at 7.
I got induced at 8 with cervidil, which softens your cervix. I started having contractions around 2am. Those few hours were so painful, but once the doctor came in with the epidural at 7am Monday it was like night and day. It's weird not feeling your legs, but I would have given anything to not have the pain from the contractions.
The midwife we used, Leah, came in to check me the next day around noon and I had dilated to 10 cm. That meant I could start pushing! I remember Matt tearing up and putting on some soothing music from a playlist he made. I pushed for almost four hours and then Leah said the baby was not getting past my pelvic bone. She said we could keep pushing, try the vacuum, or do a c-section. I kept pushing for a little bit longer and it was still the same thing -- they could see her head but it wasn't really getting closer to coming out.
Leah then called the doctor for her opinion, and she said we couldn't do the vacuum because of her positioning. She said she had another c-section to do, but she could do one for me first if I wanted. I told her to do the other patient's and then I would decide when she got back. Matt says at this point I went into what he calls "beast mode" where I pushed harder than ever. The epidural had worn off some at this point so I was feeling it some down there. Leah and the nurses started scrubbing up and I thought they were just being cautious and I still was going to have a c-section. After pushing for so long I started to doubt this baby was actually coming out of me.
Nevertheless, about 15 minutes later, at 5:33pm, little Ruthie finally came out. Matt got to call the sex and cut the cord. They put her right on my chest for skin to skin and she was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
The whole experience was incredible, and Matt was an amazing coach. We keep pinching ourselves that we made a human together.
Now we are adjusting to life with a newborn. Luckily they sleep a lot at first, which I think is God's grace period before things get crazy. Even though I'm not one to sit idle, I know I need to rest to heal my body (I had a level 3 tear), so we have been watching a lot of Downton Abbey. :-)
Even though I am a mom now, this blog won't just be a "mommy" blog. I hope to still write about the same things I did before, but of course there will be lots of posts about Ruthie as well.
We are so grateful that God allowed us to expand our little family! Ruthie we love you so much already.
